In Memory of Miep Gies

Miep Gies is the last survivour of the volunteers who hid Anne Frank and her family and four other jews that the Franks knew by the names of Peter Pfefer and the VanPels Family.

After two whole years of hiding in a secret part of the building--the entrace covered by a bookcase--the Gestapo (the secret police) was told that a group of Jews were hiding in the offices of Otto Frank's former office, which was run the same way with the same employees &c.  To this day, no one knows of the infamous person who betrayed the Franks and their friends.

When the Franks had been arrested, Miep and Bep (another volunteer) went to the secret annex and collected Anne's diary which had been spilled across the floor.

The two men volunteers had been arrested, later to be taken to labor camps, but both survived; one was liberated, and the other escaped of a bomed train goind to the camps.  Miep and Bep were not arrested, but saddened.

Miep actually took the risk of going to the police station and tried to bribe the Franks out of capture.

Though Anne and the others never returned from the death-camps, only her father surviving, The Diary of Anne Frank or The Diary of a Young Girl was still published thanks to Miep's collecting it.

Though she would disagree with me saying this, she was and is a truly amazing woman.  When all of her well-earned fame came, she simply said that their were many people in Holland who had done the same, and that she was at the end of a long line of people who had risked their lives to help others, and even though there were many people who risked their lives, she is up in the line with Corrie and Betsie TenBoom, and others.

Today she died at the age of 100 and will be rembered always.
